Folks, If your thinking about replacement tires for your M109R. You need to know that the OEM 240 and the replacement 240 advertised on most websites may be different. Also the fitment may look weird after the install. So beware...

I recommend that you step up to the 250 Dunny Elites. The tires are an awesome upgrade over the OEM Dunnys. You will gain more width on the rear as well as about 1 inch height (for those with lowered M109Rs). Prices are cheaper for the Dunnys over most other compatible tires on the market (i.e. Metz, Avon, etc).

Note: The M109R rear rim does NOT work well with the Metz 280. Sure you can get it on there but you will have accelerated wear at the edges of the tire. You need a 10 inch rim to run the 280. Max size for the stock rim is 250 Elite, 260 Metz. The 250 Elite is actually wider than the 260 Metz.

Im agree with Delmustator. The Dunlop E3s work.

I've got 4400 miles on my metz 280 ( stock rim ), and I'm just starting to see some uneven wear on the rounded edge, and I push it fairly hard in the twisties.. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k76/MC57_2006/240removal280install022.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k76/MC57_2006/Squibbybeachshots001.jpg

I got kinda caught out in October in Fayetteville, AR.
My rear tire corded on me in the mountains. I babied her back to another riders house (JUtah for those who know). He & the rest of the guys turned into a NASCAR pit crew and dropped the rear tire off in less than a minute.
We put the worn out tire in the trunk of his car and sped off to the bike shop that he had already called & confirmed that they had a tire available.
The only tire that they had of the right size was a Metz 240. To be perfectly honest...I'm QUITE happy with that tire. The bike leans quicker & easier than it did with the stock Dunnie on it. I'd have liked to have a Metz 260 or a Dunnie E3 250...but they did not have them in stock and I needed a tire "NOW".
I'll probably upgrade to one of the others when I need a new tire...but for now...I'll work with the Metz 240 that I have.

Swung by Busa's house on Saturday and well...let's just say that I'm VERY impressed with each of the mods that he's done. Some guys do a mod and it doesn't look right on the bike or it doesn't fit well. Suzuki should take note in case they're wanting to create a "fully loaded" M109R!!
That 280 on a 10" rim is just amazing! I couldn't stop checking it out. I hope that they didn't think I was some sort of perv for constantly checking out the bike....LOL

Anyway...Good job Busa, on all of your mods!

If you are lowered and rubbing already, by using the 1" higher Elite will obviously rub a bit more.. But they sure do look good :)

I replaced another tire in Arkansas.
This time, instead of a thin strip showing 1-2 cords, I had a strip over an inch wide and was in Eureka Springs. I rode that afternoon (fairly hard) back to the campground and the next morning (much tamer) over to Fayetteville. I pulled the wheel off myself with some great direction from JUtah (Rich). He had his B-King up in the air with both tires off, so I had to wait until he got his front tire on to change mine. $201.00 and a few hours later, I had a Dunny Elite 3 tire back on the bike and we hit the road for some scrubbing in. He got his new super sticky tires all scrubbed in and I got mine done pretty well.

I ended up putting on another 240, just like the Metz.
observations between stock, Metz, and Dunny E3

Stock was a bit hard and had an odd curve that made cornering more of a chore, but I got 6300 miles out of it.

Metz was much stickier and handled SIGNIFICANTLY better, but I got less than 5000 miles on it and it was $300.00

Dunny E3 seems to stick to the ground as well as the metz and I hope that it lasts at least 4000 miles. That alone would make it a much better deal than the Metz. I have noticed that the dunny has a shorter profile than the Metz because I was dragging pegs all over the place this past week.

Yes folks, you read correctly...I was dragging pegs.
This might have been partly due to the fact that instead of following other
M109R's around for the week, I was following a B-King or two around. I was able to maintain the same lines as they were. They might have been able to run off and leave me, but they didn't. (I blame this as much on me being insane as I do the tires though)

I vote for the fact that you can just damn well RIDE good!

I have 1 of the Bkings that Bud was following and hes got the skills. Or do i just lack the skills??????

All in all had a lot of fun and it was good to hear you finally scrapped a peg. I rode with you when i had my 109 you never scrapped i left half of my bike on the ground.

You, Sir, give me entirely tooooo much credit.
The only reason I was able to keep up with you on your BKing is that you were setting a good pace that we could all follow and have fun with. You and I discussed the fact that you don't like to set a pace that someone is going to get hurt trying to keep up and I appreciate it!

I had even more fun this year than last! *starts attempting to save up for a trip to The Dragon sometime next year* With my annual bonus and taxes...I might be able to scrape enough together. But, The bike should be breathing even better by then.

Can't wait to see you all again (Mike, Karen, Gary, Toni) Thank you all for the great times that we've already had together and I look forward to many more in the future!!!!!!!!

Cant wait to do it again as well!

What kind of riding style do you have for the stock tires to be to hard ? Just wondering.

Jim

I dont ride it to hard Ctaytk he can a test to this. Its just I don't feel any input from the tires. The Metzeler Sportec M3 was a big help on my other bike better input and just flat out felt better setting it in the corners.

So more than anything its a personal preference thing not enough feed back or feel, I have read a lot of people complaining about the tires. But as long as I have been riding i have always used Dunlop tires , Except on my Honda Cr 500 they will not stay on that bike, But metz will. I not showing off or anything I would not do that but it is easy to show than to try and type it. This is stock Dunlops on my bike with about 3700 miles on them. Well i can ride the bike but cant figure out how post more than one pic at a time... i hope i did not upset anyone special you Jim. But i push the tires to the limits with never a OH SH@T moment , If they still made the same tire I would buy another set but they dont. The only other tire i have that out performs the Dunlop is the new Avon and i never though i would wast a dime on a Avon, but i have been made to believe very sticky, lots of feed back all the feel you could ever need or want with the stock suspension.

Well...if you don't want to mortgage your home for a set of tires...give the Dunlop E3 tires a chance. I think that you'll find that they give MUCH more feedback and MUCH better feel than the stock tires. I have ridden with both the Metz & Dunnlop E3 and I won't be going back to Metz unless they stop making the E3.

Not to mention that if you don't like them....you didn't waste 5-6 hundred bucks on tires just to try them out. I have noticed that the Dunnie E3's need a little more warming up at the beginning of a ride, but not so much as to be a bother. I never ride overly agressively straight out of the box anyway...

To me the stock dunnies felt ROUGH on bumps. They seemed to transfer rather than absorb all the indifferences in road surface. I was able to get the stock tires to slid loose a couple of times just slight nothing major. Due to the amount of roughness i could not get as much feed back as i wanted from the tires.

I prefered the Metz 130/260 tire combo. I tried the dunnie 250 it was a better tire than stock. IMO i had more feedback from the road it also absorbed more bumps.

My experience with the metz front and dunnie back combo was that it developed a high speed, sort of speed wobble when cornering aggressively. Not when the tires were new but once you get about half of the rear tire worn down.

ALL IN ALL...

Stock tires = moderate mileage, high price, low feedback, harsh feeling
Metz front/dun rear = Good feedback, good mileage, good price, speed wobble
Metz front/rear = Great feedback, good mileage, moderate price, soft ride.

Handling...

Stock tires = hard to get to push over to line, constant and predictable
E3 dunnie = moderate push to line, constant and predictable (some doubt on speed wobble at first)
Metz combo = Very fast push to line, constant and predictable nearly telepathic handling.

Thats my .02 i never used the pirelli or avon tires on the M109.

At what point does a swing arm change come into play on the widening of the rear tire?

Ctatyk
04-26-2009, 05:21 PM
I do believe that it's when you go to a 300 rear tire on a 10" rim.
I'm pretty sure that Mike had a 10" rim with a 280 on the rear and other than having to take parts off of the rim & assembling it after he had angled it around the swingarm....he had no problems with it.

Looking for some input... Please...
I'm running original front and rear wheels on a 2006 M109R. I've gone to Avon's with a 250 on rear and love it! Well... That was until I saw I really sweet 300 swingarm Kit!!! Never satisfied are we?

So, those of you that have them: how do the bigger wheel/tire combo handle in the corners? I'm partial to the 300 Avon because It's round and sticky. I realize it takes more to turn the beast, but HOW MUCH MORE?

I live near Deals Gap NC "The Dragon", so curves are usually part of the trip. I'm not crazy, but do occationally "throw sparks" just because it's so easy on this Beast! I'd hate to loose that fun...

Thanks

I know this is an old thread but I'm a newbie to the site and hope I get a reply. I read a few posts that said I can put a Metz 280 on a stock rim, That correct? Reason I ask is cus when I went to purchase a 280 they straight out told me, wont fit your bike. I have a 2006 M109r.

Ctatyk

You'd be straight up dumb to put a 280 on a stock rim.
A very few have done it with no problems, many more have had problems with the tires & handling of the bike not to mention the safety issues of forcing the contour of the tire into a bend tighter than it is supposed to have. There is a reason why every tire has a "minimum" wheel width associated with it. That's the MINIMUM width of wheel that it is safe to put that tire on.
That is all.

Guys, your post have been very informative. I'm a little pissed that I didn't come here before I purchased my rims/tires for my M-109. I have a widen rim on the way (18x10) for a 280 tire to go on my stock swingarm. What's the best bang for my buck on tires for this rim? Has anyone had any major fitment issues with going to a wider rim on the stock swingarm? Lastly, can a 300 go on this rim without changing the swingarm? I'm a Busa rider by nature. This is my first Boulevard, so please excuse my ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry that this reply is so late in coming. I've been away from my computer for a few weeks. (It's riding season in Kansas City ya know)
I believe that is the size rim that BusaBeater2 had on his and it was on a stock swing arm. However, you'll have to partially disassemble the rim when putting it on and then reassemble it. As for bang for your buck tires, I don't know. I run Dunlop E3 250 on the rear (actually a smidge wider than the 260 from Metzeler) and a Continental stock size on the front. I figured that if it's a good enough tire to hold up to a 1000lb goldwing at speed, it would be fine on my bike. So far, it's wearing perfectly and handles spectacularly.
